英国著名物理学家希格斯7日在新闻发布会上表示很快将能见到“上帝粒子”。

在40多年前预言了希格斯玻色子存在的英国物理学家彼得·希格斯,日前在参观欧洲核子研究中心的大 型强子对撞机(LHC)时对媒体说:“几乎可以确定,很快就可以发现希格斯玻色子。”

希格斯玻色子被认为是物质的质量之源,它是“标准模型”这一粒子物理学理论中最后一种未被证实的粒子,但是它的存在却是整个“标准模型”的基石。因此,它被称为粒子物理学的“圣杯”,也被称为“上帝粒子”,充满了神秘色彩。

自从希格斯预言这一粒子存在以来,科学家们就一直试图在实验中发现该粒子从而证实其存在,但至今所有努力均告失败。

于2003年开始兴建的欧洲大型强子对撞机位于法国和瑞士边境地区地下100米深、约27公里长的环形隧道中,耗资总计约20亿美元,预计将于今年6月正式开始运行。届时,它将凭借能使单束粒子流能量达到7万亿电子伏特而成为世界上能级最高的对撞机。科学家普遍期望在这一对撞机的帮助下,能够在前所未有的对撞能量下取得包括发现希格斯玻色子在内的新发现。
